“Sell your soul to see this play.” – The Rover
May 1 – 5, 2013
at the Segal Centre Studio
A new adaptation by Alison Darcy and Joseph Shragge
Directed by Alison Darcy
The first installment in the development of a new adaptation of the Faust myth, Scapegoat Carnivale Theatre’s Faust premiered at the Segal Centre for Performing Arts Studio as a workshop production.
Goethe’s Faust, which Harold Bloom has called “the most grotesque masterpiece of Western poetry,” is a philosophical adventure tale, revolving around a man’s quest for knowledge and experience, which leads him to make a deal with the devil. Drawing from Faust Part One as well as from its wildly fantastical, rarely touched upon sequel, Scapegoat Carnivale’s Faust incorporates video and shadow puppets to bring to life the play’s many settings, ranging from Faust’s study, ancient Greece, and the rocky bays of the Aegean Sea, to Hell itself. These scenes feature witches, talking monkeys, sphinxes, dryads, a troop of lemurs and a chorus of blessed boys.
The talented cast includes Daniel Brochu, Shannon Hamilton, Marcel Jeannin, James Loye, Julie Tamiko Manning, and Maurice Podbrey.
